When I attended the Sex and Religon concert in San Antonio Tx (Sneakers Night club), I was front row center....at beleive that was the FIRST time I had ever seen a jem w/ the monkey grip, so I didn't really know what I was looking at. During a solo part of the show....hw was really into the solo, slung the guitar off and threw it into the drum riser....it didn't seperate.....but I did see wood fly. It hit hard and LOUD. Kinda scared me a bit....but was pretty cool!

I'm fairly sure that Yngwie smashed a Fender in Chicago on G3 too. So it wasn't an isolated incident.

I absolutely hate to see artists smash guitars. I know that they're THEIR guitars, but can you imagine if Vai gave that axe to someone in the audience. How awesome and special that would be, even if it wouldn't stay in tune?

Yeah, to give someone that guitar would be special. I'm sure it would make that person's life. I know it would make mine, even if it wouldn't stay in tune! :)

Mikey wrote:Actually, the guitar Yngwie smashed on the G3 DVD was a fan's guitar that they ASKED Yngwie to smash on stage that night. :) It wasn't a signature Malmsteen Strat.

Steve very very rarely smashes Jems. I would estimate that he's smashed less than half a dozen real premium Jems. Usually "fall guy" guitars are RGs with cheaper DX, RG or 555 necks.

I don't have a problem with smashing guitars on stage if it's in context with the performance. It's just entertainent, folks!

It was also a Squier strat. Maybe $149.00?

I disagree.
I think its cool if its a crap guitar thats worthless.
but for a stunt like.. what Yngwie Malmsteen pulled off in the Denver DVD.
That pissed me off because i thought. "what about all those kids that are saving up thousands of dollars to get a signature malmsteen strat.. or that JEM7V just to see their idol smash a guitar that has such a high price tag..
that is just disgusting and shows a lack of respect for not only the instrument but because most of their signature guitars are so highly overpriced. it's sad that they can't just stun audiences with their playing ability.. :(

I remember when I saw G3 03 in Reno, and Yngwie pulled the strings off of the guitar then smashed it.. it really pissed me off..
That's mainly one of the reasons I don't really respect Yngwie, he seems like an arrogent dick (plus I don't enjoy his playing). I talked to someone who met him that day and they said his wife was doing his hair for him and he wouldn't talk to them because he was "busy" then when she was done with his hair he walked out of the room stuttering in a drunken fit.

Not only has it nothing to do with the current topic, it's also hearsay.
Please don't post those type of rumors as this forum is not the place for that.

Thanks.

I for one am glad he smashed up a few guitars because I recently was given a head stock from a guitar Steve smashed I think during the Sex and Religion tour. Its a great thing to have and sits proudly on my desk.
I have many guitars but only one broken headstock.

Watching Yngwie smashing guitars really piss me off. But I enjoy Kurt Cobain doing that. Also Pete Townshend.

The way Steve did it is quite funny but I couldn´t stand it when idiots like Kurt Cobain smashed three guitars during one set^^

If I were to wreck my guitar onstage, I would have been on hell of a broke man. :D

Yes Mikey, you´re right & this is one of them! Could you please include it in VAI.COM´s "the Machines/Steve´s Guitars" section please? Thanks in advance!

I can understand why Steve smashed it, if something doesn't work it can really affect your playing 'cause you can't be concentrate...

Great story Backfromdead :)
