Info in regards to the PIL performances

Recently I listed PIL's Ease as one of my favorite Vai recordings of all time. Since then I have been listening to that album constantly, paying careful attention to that ending solo on Ease. Does anyone have more info regarding this album such as Steve's personal comments and perhaps even what gear was used to record this album? I read the little blurb Steve wrote about this album in the All About Steve section but I would like to find out more details. His tone is amazing and I would imagine he was using the Green Meanie or perhaps a Jackson for these sessions. Also, it would be interesting to find out if that ridiculous solo in Ease was pasted together using multiple takes or perhaps he chose which one he grooved on the most.....

Any info is appreciated,

Not sure of the equipment used - but amp-wise it could have been something that was available locally at Electric Lady Studios where I believe the guitar parts were tracked.

Believe it or not, most of the solos were recorded in one pass. A number of solos were first take - with Steve and producer Bill Laswell not even listening back to the tracks afterwards - just moving on to the next track.

As the recordings were made around the time Steve was in Alcatrazz, I can only suppose that the guitar used was possible an early incarnation of the green meanie (maybe before she was even green!)

If I remember, I'll ask Steve when I see him next.

Mikey,

You are indeed the fountain of Vai knowledge. I would really appreciate more info on that album, it still blows me away. If the Ease solo was done in one take, that would make it that much more magical.

If I am not mistaken, I need to find the article from years past. However, Steve did say it was one of his favorite solos of all time. If you dont have this cd/tape/album, try to find it. Its great..

Vaigod,

If you ever find that article I would love to get a copy. I know what you're saying about that album-compact disk-cassette, it is easily one of the biggest influences on my guitar playing and an amazing example of emotional soloing (especially the Ease solo)

The Guitar Player flexi-disk of The Attitude Song started me off in my admiration for Steve Vai, the PIL album just continued with the fun.
