Private Sessions Videos - Flo III - what pickups?

#1 Post by jjensson » Mon Nov 22, 2010 1:48 pm

Hi folks,

I just watched the improvisation over the Building The Church groove. Very nice tone. I read up on Flo III and i understand that it's alder body, but the pickups don't seems to be Evos. They look and sound like Breeds (well, at the bridge anyway :).

Can somebody from the crew shed a light on this please? And while i'm at this, does Steve play 010 strings in that video?

Best regards and thanks in advance for any help!
jj

Flo III bridge pickup is a Paf Pro. I think the body may be basswood even. Last time I saw it, it had 9's on them.

Thanks, Jeroen. It makes sense, since the polepieces, albeit the big ones, aren't silver but black.

But i'm confused about the gtr body. Here you said that it's a normal 7vwh:

To me it sounded more like alder. But i've been wrong before...

Had a chance to inspect Flo III very closely, during the Vai Festival and although the differences with a factory body are tiny, it is a custom cut body, together with the pickup makes me believe it may be basswood.

Doesn't she has bigger trem cavity? I compared the factory JEM photo, and FLO III. FLO III's cavity is slightly longer... And Jeroen, do you know what is written on the back of the body?

So all Flos are basswood, and all Evos are alder - he classifies them tonally.

Very interesting, because i found Vai's tone in the last years quite thin (maybe he likes it that way), but in this video it seems fat and punchy.

BTW, i noticed the tone control is on 2 or 3, maybe that's a big factor.

Well, Flo is basswood 100%, FLO III too, but FLO II with linear tremolo? Maybe she's alder, cause she was Alder before LACS body.....? EVO is alder 100% and so EVO II and EVO III.

Dang, this is one bugly fastard!
If this is Flo II body unfinished, than it looks more like basswood than alder. I've never seen this guitar until now.

Jeroen, just out of curiosity, what are the differences between a custom cut body and a factory body?

Thanks!

The trem route is slightly longer (the lions claw), and the monkey grip edges haven't been rounded as on factory bodies.

I've seen that neck was changed also... on the Romania special appearance, there is a normal neck...2pc.... Well, now....on the pics of SV festival, there is a 5pc neck... ....so, Jeroen, is neck still scalloped if it was changed?
