Hi people, I have read alot about Steve's tone but I was wondering if anyone knew the details of the Eat em and Smile sessions regarding his gear/pedals/amps etc.

Please don't give me the "it's his fingers" crap, I know that is a huge part but I am after the hardware details if possible.

Eat em and Smile fans please get in touch !

Think it was carvin guitar with pafs/floyd rose and maple finger board, dod ds1 etc into a "I think" carvin valve head and 4x12 but I'm sure there's nore than that.

I know that the Green Meanie Charvel was used for just about all of it.

I dont think he was using the Carvin X100B, I have one, and while it does the Flex-Able tone, it doesnt' do a very good Eat Em and Smile tone.

The Peavey JSX does a pretty nice Eat Em and Smile tone, not as good though

I seem to recall Steve saying that Dave insisted on Marshalls being used, so this was most likely when Steve started to use those Jose Arredondo modded amps....

Thanks guys, all this info does help put together a picture. I heard that the Guitar Extravaganza book lists the equipment but I would specifically like gear info on the Big Trouble song so am reluctant to buy the book if it's not specific enough...can anyone else shed some light on this?

Looking forward to more replies

Um. . . .no.

Your getting confused with something else called "Notes." Those come from he fingers!

Picking attack and personal style. . THOSE come from the fingers.

But the way an amplifier creates overdrive and the way the overdrive sounds. . .that is not controlled by the fingers.

If tone was all in the fingers, Steve wouldn't bother with the big amps and would just take around a little Gorilla practice amp. I mean, why bother with all that crap if its not necessary?

And why do all of the tones on each Vai album sound different? Same Steve Vai playing. . just distinct overdrive tones.

yeah, the octaver he's using is called the bs-1953,

jk. i think most of the octave doubled lines are steve and billy sheehan (billy sheehan = bs, year of birth = 1953, lol).
