Does Steve file his nuts down?
...I know what you're gonna say... :roll:

now that I've got your attention....
the nut on my '03 vwh is seemingly filed down on the high e side
while the nut on my '00 RG is not.
on the RG, when chording on or around the 1st fret, my finger
scrapes on the high side of the nut.

was there a difference in nut profile from year to year?
if so, can the nut be filed down without damaging it?
...i'd hate to ruin a perfectly good nut by cracking it or something.

Are you saying that the bottom of the nut is filed down, or the slot on top?

I would say that your VWH is simply showing signs of having actually received a "true" set-up from the factory, while the RG was simply "just assembled". For the extra cost, you would hope the JEM gets a little more attention from the factory.....

the nut on my 7vwh was filed down (by Rich) on the bottom side (fretboard side) but still, the high E edge of it seems to be shorter than that of the RG nut. kind of like it's been "radiused' radius-ed?

and what I'd like to know is:
if I start filing the jagged, upper half of that side of the nut....
is there a propensity for the whole thing to crack or anything like that?

Well, I'm nut sure if I would go at it with a file...
You probably need something more along the line of sander/grinder that will do a nice, smooth job.
Besides ruining the finish of the nut, i doubt you can really destroy it.
But if you do, there are always replacements......

"Excuse me Sir, but do you have any spare nuts?"

I'm confused as to which part of the nut is scraping your finger? I have a 2003 VWH also. When I received the guitar, the shim underneath the nut was protruding from the side of the nut itself (I'd usually scrape my thumb). So I had to relieve the string tension completely (I just blocked the trem and removed the strings), and loosen the screws behind the neck and push the shim in slightly.

However, this doesn't sound like your issue if your index finger is scraping. Those nuts are the same from the RG's and the JEMs (with the exception of the color coating).

it's not the shim.
ok....how do I explain......
when you look down the neck toward the headstock.
the strings sit in the "V" of the nut.
like this:
VVVVVV <---- it's the uppermost edge of the v on the high e side
EADGBE

the above is the way it appears on my '00 RG AND '03 vsbl
NOW....
the way the v-pattern looks on my '03 vwh is like this:

see how I've made the last part shorter than the rest?
apparently that part of the nut on my vwh has been filed down at the factory 'cause the finish is gold with no flaws.

I'm not complaining....I LOVE it....but why is it like this on only my '03 7vwh & none of the others?

Ah I see... Yeah, I never noticed that to be honest. But the nut on the JEM is radiused compared to the RGs.

I wouldn't mess with the ones on my RGs. They don't bother me and the locking pad is actually higher than the top of the V groove.

Yep I think he probably is! But then again aren't we all?

The nut on my RG seems a little rounder on the part that has been mentioned. The one my Jem is a little bit spikey if I catch my finger on it though.
