against some things that people say about scalloping, scalloping is made intended to have more control in vibratos and bendings, because there's no friction between your fingers and the fretboard. Improved sustain have not to do with the fretboard, since the strings don't even touch it. Improved sustain, have more to do with the string action. You can sometimes figure out, how yngwie can hold a not for long periods of time: because of his high string action! And playing guitar is not PUSHING the strings against the fretboard with your fingers, is TOUCHING the strings with your fingers. Steve said that the scallops is forincreased volume too. When you play at hight registers and try to hold a note, you have to "squeeze" your fingers in a specific region to sustain the note right.
