Which amp (or song) has the best "Vai sound" ?

I think the Bogner Extacy was Steve's best sound. When I listen to the '97 G3 DVD I really really like Steve's sound. Very fluid and not harsh (I hate harsh sounding guitars). I own a Legacy combo (although I'm not playing evo's right now) but I must say that the Legacy isn't the right sound for me and I feel that it isn't the right sound for Steve either. Who agrees??

This might just be me, but I got an almost "authentic" Vai sound using that new Line 6 Spider II half-stack.

After I adjusted the delay and reverb (among other things), I saved it into the pedal board.

Now, I can play "For the Love of God" and get a perfect sound. The wah even sounds great on the solo.

I agree. I also prefer his earlier sounds. Just guessing from the sound on Ultra Zone was still alot of Bogner. During this time I guess he was making a transition. But I don't dislike his current sound, just prefer the old more.

I have a Legacy Head and loved it until I got my Marshall fixed. I think my Legacy may be sick. I've re-tubed and still the same.

sorry guys but I have to say that transistor amps cannot actually rereate a vai-like sound. Vai always got his power tubes burning and most of the time it are EL34's.
And about the ultra zone: a lot of songs are legacy in my opinion,
except the beautiful solo in I'll be around , typically Bogner..

I have always grooved on Vai' sound on PIL's "Ease"

Besides the ridiculous guitar playing his sound is just classic Vai, a little bit raw but pure energy.

I have no clue what he was using back then, but I still enjoy that song.

Agree with the "EASE" comment there - brilliant song, brilliant sound. Johnny Lydon's most important flash of inspiration there, IMO

Upon further listening to UZ I agree, there is alot more Legacy on there than I remembered. The first, G3 live disc tone, definately sings on FTLG. It is a great tone.

I'm still not sure which of his tones I like best but his DLR records stick out in my mind. P&W is my favorite record of his but there is so many tones on there and I can't pick just one.

I was listening to P&W again last night, and the thickness yet clarity of the tones on that album consistently impress me. Am I right in thinking that most of the songs on there were recorded using either UVs or JEMs with PAF Pros? In which case, this proves you don't need to use high-output pups to get a good lead tone.

I was going to invest in a Bogner, until I saw how outrageously expensive they were. Looks like I'm getting a Legacy.
