I would buy a sustainer, but I LOVE my neck pickups (great for soloing, amazing tones when combined with a middle pickup).

Yeah, I'm not a huge fan of the Marshall sound either, there are better amps out there, especially in the price range of your amp.

If you want, try using a Boss DS-1, it'll give you AMAZING distortions.

Try cutting the tone knob, and turn everything down low and go from there, the pickups could be pretty dead.

Honestly I didn't think Octavarium was amazing, so Systematic Chaos is amazingly good. They definitely went in a darker, Train of Thought direction, which is what I wanted because Train of Thought is my favorite cd by them.
