Yeah, that's right. I'd say 80% of the sound depends on the amp and / or pedals (if there's such like distortion pedals etc.)

Get a guitar with a HSH or HH pickup setup (DiMarzio will get you even closer) and a Floyd Rose.

That's a good start.

Sorry to bring back such an old topic... but, doesn't Steve use the sustainer for the part of FTLOG where the melody goes.. D D\B B\A A\G G B E.... D D........ ...? Or how does he get so much sustain without picking? err, I'm pretty sure thats picked, I can definitely hear the pick attack in there,...

It's called a talkbox.

Some of the people that have used it - Peter Frampton, Richie Sambora, Slash, John Petrucci, etc.

Check out Sambora's performance: (red t-shirt)

I'd go for the Rocktron Banshee. I think it's the best choice for regular guitarists.

Yeah, that's cool... I didn't know that there were Legacy monitors, though...

EDIT

I'm an idiot. That's a regular 2x12, cab, right?

I wonder how he wires it... Can it be tapped into both heads?

Those ARE helfpul advices, but it's not the same for everyone. Don't know why, but I always have to have the trebe at least up to 80% on my ValveKing if I don't want a REALLY muddy sound.

Your problem - too much money. (invested in gear) That is, if you're not a professional musician who makes his bread playing guitar. If you're not, I seriously doubt you will use all those guitars that frequently and get to bring out their maximum. ... What I would do, so this is IMHO: I'd sell some...

I still don't get it.

Isn't a sustainer supposed to "hold the note forever"?

This solo sounds pretty normal. (the part after the legato)

Or can the sustainer work both as a normal pickup and as a sustainer?

Here's a little recording I did today, using the Strat, ValveKing, Shure, and my computer. Considering my guitar / soundcard / speakers / software skills, I'm pretty satisfied with the result.

This is not a my-band-self-promotion, just a little home-recording.

Here's a pic I took today, my ValveKing 112, Ibanez AEG10 electric-acoustic, Squier Affinity Strat, Shure Beta 58A and my Dell computer.

I need to finish some recordings tomorrow, I'll try to post them. :)
