My friend told me it's used to prevent the string from getting stuck underneath the pickup cover - which is a bit unlogic - but he said it's true, when you do heavy whammy work.

That's what a volume pedal does! If it's in front of your amp, it is supposed to act like your volume knob. And if you want to do volume swells, it's also supposed to take out the distortion. If you only want to control the overall volume, you put it after the distortion, if you only use distortion ...
