What tricks do you use to spark creativity?

There's many different ways you can go about writing music, so what have you tried to get your creative juices flowing? Something I enjoy doing is getting a multieffects processor or computer program like amplitube with presets, and what I do is I go through each preset and try and write a song that...

Re: Tips for building up speed

would be nice to know what exactly you're struggling with, is it the picking, is it the fingering, is it the sync of picking and fingering. But I guess whatever it is play slow and clean but also play light. What I mean by that is let the pick glide over the strings without to much effort on your pa...

Re: jem re-string

get two coke bottle lids, they fit perfectly between the claw and trem, holding it up while you take off the strings. If you're not wanting to do a full clean then just restring one at a time, otherwise put the coke bottle lids under the trem and go for gold. If there's any build up of dead skin and...

Re: How to use the modes

yeh that's what I do, gravitate toward the notes and intervals that gives the mode it's sound, I think like Mixolydian and Ionian scales have only 1 note difference so you kind of have to. What I've never really experimented with is changing the 'base' scale that I'm using. So say if the song is in ...

Re: Building a home studio

Thanks, yeh I will definitely be trialing alot of software before deciding. What I really want from this studio is to do just first drafts of song ideas, I'll probably go to a professional studio to do final cuts of things. This is why I want the software to be as simplistic as possible, I don't wan...

Re: Building a home studio

thanks Jeries, I was thinking of the m-audio fast track but I like that you can buy the mbox with pro tools as a bundle so I'm thinking maybe the mbox3 with pro tools is the way to go. My only concern is, isn't pro tools fairly intense as far as usability goes. Will it be hard for someone with very ...

Building a home studio

I've recently bought my own home and am thinking of turning one of the rooms into a soundproof home recording studio. However I'm not quite sure what to get. I'd mainly want to record my guitar, keyboard and vocals. I don't want to go too crazy and buy the top of the line gear but what would people ...

How to use the modes

Hi Guys I know the topic modes comes up a lot but I'm not looking to learn the basics of how they work, now I'm wanting to know how to use them properly over any progression. I have a moderate knowledge of how they work but when I put it into practice I can never seem to play them right. My dorian w...

Wasted Strings?

What happens to the 'old' strings for major artists like vai when they get changed? Do they just get thrown out? I was just thinking how many string changes vai and other major guitarists must go through (which I think is overkill) and if they ever thought of recycling them or not. I remember a mate...

Re: Vai has no feel

It's the only major thread on the subject, granted a fairly pointless argument (you either like vai or you don't) but I don't think it should be deleted just because it offends your opinion.

Nope, vai has feel, let's censor all those who oppose it.

Re: can some licks only be played one way?

I think I know the part in the petrucci video you mean and no, that's when you go: ---3-3-3-3-3-3 ----5-5-5-5-5-5 If you start on a down stroke you'll be locked in between the two strings, if you start on a upstroke you are alternating on the outside. Good video to watch regardless. It'll just take ...

Re: What are you practicing at the moment ???

Right now I'm stuck, I'm a beginner who doesn't know what to practice to become better there's always stuff to do that can be done at any stage. Learn more chords, learn how they get structured and play around with them writing each one would be so it sticks in your mind. Learn scales, or take a cr...
