I'm more curious to know what it looked like before it was toasted.

I've been a devout Marshall user and owner for many years. I'm the same way about Marshall amps and Ibanez JEM (and UV) guitars the way some people are about professional team sports. I feel Marshalls are even more capable of delivering a wider variety of tones for many styles and tastes than they e...

Mountain is great. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. West several years ago when I worked for a music store. A very cool and interesting guy. He came in for an emergency guitar for a song that was running through his mind (if I recall correctly - I wish I knew what became of that). I didn't recogniz...

SOTT was great and I have my personal attachments to it. I probably love the 1987 album and SOTT equally. SOTT is the point wher I really began to pay more attention to Vai. I was 13 at the time and already wanted a Jem guitar. My first influence was Adrian Vandenberg so it was cool that they were i...

Is there a "one that got away?"

Hi: I'm sure many of the guitarists on this forum can relate - did you ever part with a piece of equipment and wish you never did for any reason? Even with celebrity status and having travelled the world, I'm curious to know if there has ever been a piece of gear that Steve Vai parted with - both vo...

Not too many things I can think of better than a Jem but here are my thoughts: Ibanez RG or JEM Body AANJ and extended treble-side cutaway (like Jacksons) 24 fret-rosewood board / vine inlay / 16-17" radius LED or fiber-optic side dots Reverse matching headstock Clear pickguard direct mouted neck p/...

Whitesnake during that period already was and still is my number one favorite band (well, now that spot has been tied with the Gin Blossoms for the past 12 years of so if you can figure that combo out). Anyway, I already liked Vai but I started paying more attention at that point. I love the SOTT al...

Funny. I haven't surfed the forum in a few weeks and I just ran across this thread. I saw a Jem777VDY on VH1 Classic last night in a Shotgun Messiah video. the guitarist hada modded pickguard that extended into the upper horn and replaced the pink knobs with green ones (like the 777DY). I saw an add...

There's a lot more to the tone to tubes than just brand (proper biasing, age, tweaks, etc). I find tubes to be like pickups and strings in the fact that it's very difficult to make a more "definitive" generalization. For the record, Marshalls have been shipping with Svetlanas.

I received some free samples a couple of years back but gave them to my now stepson. We didn't have a significant opinion on them versus the others we've tried. My faves will always be Blue Steel.

As Whitesnake is one of my top-two all-time favorite bands, I would've loved to have heard what it would've sounded like if Vai was involved in the initial songwriting process at that time. I'm equally as curious to know what SOTT would've sounded like with Adrian actually playing on the record. On ...

The Boss pedal you are referring to isn't a sustainer in the same capacity as the Fernandes unit. The Boss unit is a compressor: evening out peaks in the signal as well as bringing-up the softer signals. Squeezing these two ends of the signal volume closer together results in a more even and smoothe...
