My Amp Died

Today, when I went to turn on my Marshall DSL401 before playing, nothing happened. It won't turn on or anything, almost as if it's not getting any power. It was working fine yesterday. And, yes, I have checked all of the obvious potential problems. It seems to be something wrong with the amp interna...

Does anybody else think it was really lucky that somebody recognized where the music had come from before Steve released Fire Garden? Had he released that record thinking that he had composed that bit of music, he could have faced some potentially serious copyright issues.

Thanks for the input, guys. The reason I asked is because I've just recently jumped into music theory and I'm finding it difficult to know where to go from here. I've spent some time studying and I feel like I have a good understanding of the major scale, so I decided to delve into the lydian mode. ...

A Philosophical Question

Would it be better to go about memorizing all of the modes in one key and then moving on to another key, or would it be more beneficial/easier to learn the same mode in all of the keys before moving on to another mode? Or does it even matter? It seems like a fairly daunting task either way.

The BB Preamp by Xotic Effects is definitely the best sounding distortion box I've heard in a long time.

Tool's "Lateralus" or "10,000 Days." The artwork for both of those records is breathtaking. Alex Grey is a genius and his visuals only serve to enhance the already ambitious scope of Tool's music.

I can imagine that the process of recording a full orchestra is vastly different from recording guitar/bass/drums in a studio; this will undoubtedly have an influence on how the final recordings will sound. That being said, while I have also noticed that my orchestral recordings seem to be somewhat ...

Phrase Samplers/Loopers Question

Hey guys, I've been messing around with a phrase sampler a lot lately and it's been a great addition to my setup, as it's a fantastic practice and composition tool; however, there is one thing that is bothering me. I would like to be able to loop a passage on the clean channel of my amp and then pla...

By their very nature, guitars are impossible to tune perfectly. Regardless of what you do, your guitar is going to be slightly out of tune somewhere on the neck. As far as Steve's Sound Theories performances are concerned, his guitars are as in tune as they can be; it's just that when contrasted wit...

Steve was featured in a book, fairly recently, entitled Ten Eternal Questions by Zoë Sallis; he offers commentary on the very issue that you raised in this thread. If you're interested in gaining some insight into Steve's perspective, that might be a good place to start. That being said, it is impor...

Not to get too far off topic, but speaking of "Kittens Got Claws," I am a bit frustrated with iTunes at the moment. I nearly have Steve's entire catalog in my iTunes library (all purchased legally, of course) except for a few select tracks from the anthology. In order to get these songs, "Kittens Go...

Electric vs. Acoustic

Hey, guys. I've been struggling with a dilemma recently and I'd like to get your thoughts/opinions. I've been playing guitar for about ten years, and the vast majority of that time has been dedicated to the electric guitar. I have nice equipment, including a JEM7VWH (which I love) and a Marshall tub...
