Re: 26 October 2013 - Tyler, TX - Story of Light Tour

This show was incredible, exactly the Vai concert I have always wanted to see! We drove up from Houston to see him, and it was definitely worth it. I became a fan of Steve at the age of 17, when a friend loaned me his copy of Real Illusions right after it was released. I was hooked and immediately b...

Re: Some help/advice would be appreciated here

the way i broke into it was by learning the guitar part comfortably, and then speaking the words without pitches while i played. once i could do that then i added pitches. its rough at first but if you focus and keep at it soon it wont be a problem.

easiest way to remember 4ths/5ths and compounds is that the perfect intervals all have the same accidental except B-F# (or Bb-F)

and then if you listen to hand on heart, the whole intro where its just the guitar the picking is just jumping out at you. i think alot of it too is that vai does alot of legato where hes only picking a note of two from a group of more, but sometimes you can pin down places where he picks every(or a...

to me it seemed like they were really flailing about trying to create the whole show - i mean could they have focused more on that same foo fighters song or amy winehouse? i mean i dont really listen to popular radio but cmon, theres ALOT more albums that have been released over the last year. I was...

there are two hangups that guitarists seem to have with theory that I have found so far; thinking of their playing ability separate from theory and viewing theory as rules. guitarists seem to get so focused on particular aspects of music like technique or tone or theory or whatnot that they do so to...

One thing I love about Vai's music is that you can never put your finger on him - he writes and plays whatever he wants. he doesn't really fit into a genre neatly because he can and does do everything. I think that adds so much more dimension to an artist than a band or individual who sits down and ...

i havent been to any concerts on this tour but generally a show will START at around 8 or 9 if not later - doors at 7:30 just means thats when people are allowed inside the venue. its usually quite a while before the main act starts playing. I would be willing to venture at least midnight if not clo...

I want to track one of those down now  Seems like older texts involving steve are hard to come by - I just finished a hell of a time finding a copy of that frank zappa guitar songbook and finally nabbed one.

ive always dug the ZR trem on my ibanez S - it stays in tune like a mother and its just easy to deal with. its not quite as your standard post pivoting FR or licensed FR but its a nice piece to deal with. its not too great for flashy tricks though, but thats what my other guitars are for

hard choice. the only way im able to choose is because RI is definitely my favorite vai album. not to discredit the others in any way, but that music is AMAZING for me. to me it is the height of what a (mostly) instrumental rock album should be.
