CARVIN QUAD X

Has anyone used one of these preamps before? I was considering buying one but I'm not sure I should or not. Go here to listen to the kind of tone I like - www.myspace.com/mattroberts . I know it has a lot of tubes, but is it naturally a high gain amp?

Scalloping doesn't have much to do with the sound at all, it's actually a little harder to sound better with scalloped frets. When you scallop your frets, the notes are a lot more touch sensitive. You need to a good ear to have perfect intonation because of how pressure oriented the scalloped frets ...

I use the TS7 as a boost to my gain channel, and I get some pretty killer tones. I wouldn't go knocking the cheaper ones too much, I believe Vai uses a TS9DX.

Well, if you don't have the three EQ knobs and just the shape knobs, then try putting your gain on around 7 and your shape somewhere around 6 to 8.

EDIT: Oh, and if you're going to get a pedal to boost your gain channel, don't get a DS1. Go with a tube screamer.

Try just playing in Phrygian Dominant instead. That is the fifth mode of the harmonic minor scale. If you're playing A harmonic minor, play the same notes starting from an E. If you're playing in E harmonic minor, play the same notes but starting from a B.

Jesus, don't do that! Mids are your friend. Don't go too crazy with your gain either, I wouldn't go above an 8 depending on the amp type you have. Try using a heavier pick attack for a chunkier sound. Tone comes from your hands. The dynamic of your playing makes a bigger difference than you would th...
