A Note From Steve

The ZPZ rehearsals are coming along tremendously. It's such a thrill to be playing Frank's music again.  Dweezil has gone above and beyond in reproducing Frank's music with the band and he is playing his ASS off!  I don't believe this material has ever been performed as authentically in the past, with the exception of Frank with his band.

Regarding my contribution, I join the band for the last 30 or so minutes of the set, plus a song in the encore.  I have an exciting solo section in a song called  - well,  you can judge for yourself.  And Dweezil and I get to tear it up together on - yeah, you'll have to be there.

I have been told (and have read) that there are some folks that are wondering if we are playing any of my songs. We are not.  This is Zappa Plays Zappa. Please keep in mind that this is all about Frank's music and my role is that of a dutiful soldier.  I venture to say that you will be hard pressed to hear this music played this way again in the future - unless and until Dweezil takes ZPZ out on the road again.

If you're a Frank fan, or have never even heard his music, I strongly recommend you treating yourself to this extravaganza. It will enrich your life!

HALO 2 - Volume 2

Steve Appears on Halo 2 Volume Two Soundtrack

Steve appears on the long awated Halo 2, Volume Two soundtrack - a followup to the widely acclaimed Halo 2, Volume One soundtrack album - which also featured Steve’s guitar work. Steve contributes guitar parts to the track “Reclaimer” - which was recorded during the initial Halo sessions in Seattle in October 2003, but remained unreleased until now.

Halo 2 Music Composer Martin O’Donnell explains: “In the summer of 2004, Nile Rodgers and I decided that it would be a good idea to present the music of Halo 2 in two separate volumes. The first volume would contain all the music that was finished and mixed plus some ‘inspired by’ music from music groups whose music was being used in the game.

Since the first soundtrack was assembled before the game actually shipped, the second volume would contain the rest of the music, some that I was still composing and producing, and would be arranged for maximum listening pleasure. The music in Halo 2 will play back a little differently each time someone plays the game but on the soundtrack, I have the opportunity to arrange the music in a way that will never change.”

Halo 2, Volume Two will be released on April 25. You can pre-order the album by clicking HERE.

A Note From Steve

Hey folks,

I just returned from Russia and the Ukraine where I did 3 clinics and autograph sessions. If it got any better I think I would have exploded. I so so so much enjoyed it, though it had its challenges.

The trip there took 30 hours from pillow to pillow, chasing the sun and landing in temperatures as low as five degrees below zero. Then the work started. But I use the word "work" loosely. After 3 or so days without sleep you just sort of start to coast and nothing rubs ya. After all these years I have found the proper word to apply to this most hopefully avoidable situation, (and you too can use this word to work miracles in your life) "whatever". Yes, that little word has whisked away much anxiety in my life. I did make it to the gym once.

That country has changed so much since I was there 11 years ago. Either that or I just didn't go out enough last time. It seems more liberal these days, or is it my eyes that are seeing more liberally? Whatever. It was a fantastic time! It's a shock sometimes to be with people who are concerned with your every motion and are so in tune with you, they feel every lash that bats. I just wonder, how did this happen? But then again most of the time I feel like a spectator having an enjoyable laugh anyway.

Serge and Alex were my confidants for the duration of the trip. They whisked me about from the nicest restaurants in town to the 4:30 am wake up calls to get to the airport, get to the next city, get to the hotel quick, prep for huge press conference, autograph session, to sound check, to clinic, to a jet-lagged bed. But those two guys sure did make me smile the whole way.

The people from this place of the Earth are just beautiful creatures. They emanate a sincerity and maturity, but at the same time there's an innocence that reflects the discoveries a culture identifies with when they are only one generation past entering a new world, deluged with freedom of choice. They are very polite too.

The clinics seemed to go very nicely. It gets challenging to hear the same question for the... hmmm, 500th time? and respond in a way that redeems my own interest in the question. But when there is someone there that has not heard my answer before, then I look forward to expressing it again because it's important to them. Who wants to hear someone sound bored? Plus, it gives me an opportunity to make the point clearer each time, but keep it tempered with understanding.

But most of the time the questions were unique. Someone asked me to make my guitar sound like what a bird looks like when it flies. So I soared up to the rafters with the mellifluousness of a phoenix in all its audio glory. Then I went out and crapped on somebody's windshield.

When I returned....

I brought a CD with the backing tracks for Crying Machine, Lotus Feet and FTLOG. But the fun stuff was when the real drummer and bass player came out and we just went for it. Very smooth. That's the communication level I miss when I'm home and there is no band around. That's what starts the itch. Next thing you know, I'm poison ivy man and booking a tour.

At the clinic the main point I was harping on was, although it can be very helpful to do finger exercises and scales, it's also very important to make musical statements that speak when you play. Through all the translation, comedy, playing and feeling, I think they got the picture. Mission successful.

I was surprised at how many people came out for this and how they knew the music. It was humbling and inspiring. I could go on about this for hours, but I really was taken back by what I was feeling from them.

On the flight home I started to take a hard look at the next year and although things are always changing, I need to get back and get those Zappa songs under my fingers. Those songs take completely different muscles both in the fingers and brain to make them work on the guitar. It's starting slow and working it up. Have not done this kind of thing in a while and it kind of feels nice. It's that liberating thing again. I just have to learn the music this time and not put the entire tour on myself. Then I go out and play some of my favorite music with the band. Just.. gotta.... get this... Urhgghg !!!! under my &#@^#%@$@* FINGERS!

In the meantime, I have to finish mixing and editing the Metropole DVD. I'm hoping I can finish the DVD before I go into rehearsals with Dweezil. Just.. gotta.... get this... Urhgghg !!!! under my &#@^#%@$@* FINGERS! And finish the DVD, yeah that's all, (helpless look into space).

Anyway, I'm excited about it all and I hope you get to hear Dweezil's band because they sound fantastic really. Dweezil is paying especially close attention to reproducing the music as close as it can get. He's even digging out some of Frank's old stomp boxes to get those sounds. For Zappa fans, I can't imagine any more care being put into Frank's music as Dweezil and his band are putting in here.

So, projecting past the ZPZ tour I should be working on the Metropole CD's, I hope to have them for a release by the end of the year, but that may be a challenge. Just.. gotta.... get this... Urhgghg !!!! under my &#@^#%@$@* FINGERS!

I miss you.

Steve On New Devin Townsend Band Album

Steve appears on the new Devin Townsend Band album Synchestra. Steve performs an amazing extended solo on the track “Triumph” which he recorded while on the road during the recent Real Illusions European Tour.

Synchestra, Devin’s sixth solo project outside Strapping Young Lad, turned out to be a very enjoyable experience for the unique and legendary Canadian musician/sound whiz and band. He worked on this project stress-free and in typical Devy style, did practically everything from song writing to mastering and engineering. Synchestra is a thirteen song collection of Devin stylings, with five or six “big Dev songs” and is a very refreshing change from the rest of the DT catalogue; stylistically closer to Terria or Ocean Machine, yet like all of his projects, still very much in a world of their own. Says Dev, “The main difference being: Synchestra is not music that 'tells you what to do' ...more like it invites you in to be a part of it, and through relatively vague lyrical content and some quasi instrumental tracks, allows you to experience it without being besieged with uncomfortable or particularly strange lyrics… for once, a record that is heavy, epic, melodic, and joyful… and it’s fun to listen to.”

Order this record by clicking here, or visit Devin’s website directly at hevydevy.com

A Note From Steve

Greetings folks,

As I write this I am on an airplane on my way home from the Real Illusions European Tour 2005.

Events in our life pass into memories and that's what we have at the end of the day. Well, this tour will go down in my memory banks as a true treasure.  It was a perfect way to close a particular chapter in my career. The band grew so very close on this tour. I will miss all the time we spent together bonding, supporting each other, laughing and just living life as a family.

I was truly fortunate on this tour to also have the very best crew I can remember touring with. All consummate professionals with great attitudes - even when their lives were being threatened from some freak club owners in Turkey.

Eric Sardinas and his band rose to the occasion every night and contributed to the overall vibe of the evening in the most effective of ways. Eric is charisma and confidence personified on the stage and I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to invite him on this, the 5th tour we have done together.  Not only are Eric and his band our friends, but his brilliant sense of humor is becoming legendary.  On our last show of the tour, during "Midway Creatures", his entire band took to the stage dressed in these spaced-out outfits that they made themselves. You will see it on film eventually.

Some of the things we accomplished on this tour was a ton of filming.  At the beginning of the tour we thought of filming a few shows for a live "Real Illusions: Reflections" DVD, but I felt that we already did this with the Live At The Astoria London DVD and did not want to repeat the concept, so we brought one very fine digital camera with us, and one very fine camera operator, Mike Mesker.  Mikey shot a ton of footage and although there will be live performance footage from this tour in the DVD, It will be composed of takes from various places around the world. There are also some surprises in store that I think you'll get a kick out of.

The EVO Experience and all of its participants were one of the true highlights of the tour for me. I so much enjoyed being with them, hearing their thoughts and conversing on various topics. I always feel a unique bond with the EVO folks and feel comfortable being candid and open with them on simple and delicate topics of discussion.  And though one of our secrets is safe for the time being, you will all be let in on it eventually.

To all of you who have attended the shows, mere thanks could not convey my gratitude for your support. It's such an honor to have had the opportunity to play for you. I will miss this in the next year or so as I retreat to the studio, after a bit of a vacation.

I have read every review post and am enormously touched. Your feedback inspires me to continue to strive for the highest vision of what might be possible through my performance and playing.

God bless, and deep love to you.

The Dub Room Special

Zappa and Vai fans alike should check out the newly re-released The Dub Room Special on DVD!

Previously released on VHS and Beta through mail order, Frank Zappa’s Dub Room Special is a rare TV special comprising two live performances from one of music’s greatest composers - one from Los Angeles public television station KCET in 1974 entitled “A Token of His Extreme”, and the New York Halloween show in 1981 (featuring a very young Steve Vai), interspersed with then-cutting edge claymation/stop motion animation from Bruce Bickford and assorted comedy bits. Much of the assorted footage on the DVD was shot by Steve’s now guitar tech Thomas Nordegg.

Although visible throughout the DVD, Steve is featured heavily during “Stevie’s Spanking.” The DVD also features the “Valley Girl” documentary. See if you can spot Dweezil playing Steve’s sticker strat!

Ten Eternal Questions

Steve is featured in an amazing new book titled Ten Eternal Questions. The book asks leading political, artistic, and religious figures the timeless spiritual questions. “What is your concept of God?” “Do you think this life is all there is?” are just two of the ten questions author Zoë Sallis puts to such diverse figures as Nelson Mandela and U2's Bono, musician Steve Vai, Shimon Peres and Jack Nicholson, Paulo Coelho and the Dalai Lama. Chapters are organized by question with extracts drawn from Sallis' interviews with almost 40 personalities, among them Bob Geldof, Steve Vai, Gore Vidal, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, Gianfranco Ferre, Farah Pahlavi (the exiled Empress of Iran), Anjelica Huston, as well as other artists, scientists, and religious figures.

In these days of increasing commercialism and religious polarization, this absorbing book speaks to an impulse for a stronger spiritual dimension in our lives and its range of answers—spontaneous, surprising, and insightful; provocative, considered, and personally revealing—offers readers much to ponder and reflect upon in their own quest to understand life's mysteries.

According to the publisher Chronicle Books, this book is due for release early next year, but some fans have already found it in their local book stores. You can pre-order the book on Amazon.com.
