Live Music - In Theaters November 20!

Live Music, the ground-breaking animated short film and worldwide collaboration by animators using a unique application built on the Facebook Platform, will be attached to TriStar Pictures' animated feature Planet 51, scheduled for a Nov. 20 wide theatrical release in North America.

The 5-minute computer-generated animated short is inspired by Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" and early CGI films. Set in a musical instrument store, the story follows Riff, a rock 'n' roll guitar, who "falls in love to the wrong song but ends up with Vanessa, the classical violin of his dreams." The story is conveyed through the universal language of music, allowing the expressions and actions of the characters to be instantly relatable globally. The instruments are brought to life through original compositions and familiar rock tunes played principally by legendary guitarist Steve Vai as Riff and acclaimed violinist Ann Marie Calhoun as Vanessa.

Live Music will also be available for download through the iTunes Music Store and Myxer beginning on Novemeber 20.

Gungi Paterson
September 30, 2009

In Memory of Gordon "Gungi" Paterson

Dear Friends,
I feel compelled to write in the memory of Gordon "Gungi" Paterson.

I first met Gungi on the David Lee Roth Eat em and Smile tour. He was our front of house mixer. Gungi was Scottish and a giant of a man at over 7 feet tall with an even larger heart. I had the honor of working with him on my Fire Garden tour where he tour managed and did front of house sound.

Gungi was one of those people who was always smiling and never had a bad word to say about anyone. He was honest, professional and had a great sense of humor and joy about him. You could not help but feel uplifted being around him.

Brave too. On our Fire Garden tour the compressor on our tour bus caught fire and burned the bus to the ground. While it was ablaze, Gungi bravely (albeit foolishly) raced into the bus, into the bunk area and retrieved $60,000.00 of tour proceeds that were under his mattress. After he came out of the burning bus I thought, "Well, then I'm going to go in there and get my passport, music scores I was working on, wallet, shoes and coat because it was winter and we were in the middle of nowhere. I got as far as halfway through the front lounge when I thought I was going to be incinerated. I was sick for 2 days from breathing one small breath of the toxic smoke. I can't figure out how Gungi made it in and out of that bus. EVERYTHING burned to the ground.... except us and the money that Gungi retrieved.

He protected his bands like a shepherd watches his flock. When Gungi was around I felt comfortable and safe, not just from the challenges of being on the road, catching flights, getting to the stage on time, being in threatening positions in various third world countries, but also I knew that on his watch I was not being taken advantage of by a promoter with an agenda. He was as honest as one can be.

Gungi fought cancer valiantly for the last three years. He had made some historical breakthroughs in alternative medicine application but he eventually was taken down by the disease on Sep. 28th 2009.

Everyone who knew him loved him. He was sort of an angel here on Earth. We are all so terribly saddened by the loss of this industry solider and for those who worked with him, touring will never be the same.

Most of all, Gungi was a loving husband and father (his children being 12-14) and our hearts and prayers go out to his family at this time.

Whenever I think of him, even right now, I see that amazingly bright smiling face and hear that thick, rich Scottish accent pour out with some hysterically quick witted prompt and my heart feels heavy, but happy.

Gungi was exceptional and he will be missed.

MI Awards Honorary Degree to Guitar Legend Steve Vai

Musicians Institute has announced plans to award an honorary Doctor of Music degree to legendary rock guitarist, recording artist, producer, and composer Steve Vai. The award will be officially conferred during MI's summer graduation ceremony to be held on September 18 at LA's Wiltern Theatre.

After first achieving prominence as guitarist for the late Frank Zappa, Vai has gone on to win multiple GRAMMYs, repeatedly top critics' and readers' polls, and earn gold and platinum records while becoming the personification of contemporary guitar virtuosity. His latest concert DVD, Live In Minneapolis: Where the Wild Things Are, is set for release at the end of the month.

Describing why MI selected Vai for the honor (only the second awarded in the school's history), Vice President of Education Beth Marlis said, "Steve Vai has not only inspired countless musicians around the world and played a major role in the evolution of modern rock guitar, he also embodies MI's ideal of the artist-educator who combines relentless pursuit of his creative vision with a sense of responsibility for mentoring the next generation."

In loving memory of Les Paul

What a wonderfully historical figure he was. A genius innovator. I feel so fortunate to have performed with him twice. He was charming, funny and loved the instrument with a deep passion. Most people do not understand the tremendous contribution he made to the electric guitar and contemporary recording techniques. If it was not for Les Paul we may all be playing acoustic guitars and recording in mono.

Live In Minneapolis - Where The Wild Things Are - DVD, Blu-ray and CD

Live In Minneapolis - Where The Wild Things Are - Out September 29!

Guitar legend Steve Vai will release his concert film and live album Live In Minneapolis - Where The Wild Things Are on September 29th, 2009 through Favored Nations Records. The show was recorded and filmed at the State Theatre in Minneapolis, MN before a sold-out audience as part of Vai’s successful “Sound Theories” world tour.

Vai is widely known for both his unprecedented guitar playing techniques and the unique design of his signature series Ibanez Jem guitar. But his fans have become inextricably drawn to his melodic depth, and dynamic stage performance. The continued evolution of his craft is made apparent in the astonishing musicianship presented in Live In Minneapolis - Where The Wild Things Are. The 2 hour and 40 minute set contains several new tracks and re-orchestrated pieces culled from his rich catalog. His guitar-wielding extravaganza in ‘The Murder’ is an artistic performance piece that must be seen to be believed.   [view the trailer in High Def on YouTube and Vimeo and share with a friend!]

The addition of virtuoso violinists Alex DePue and Ann Marie Calhoun add a dazzling dimension to Vai’s compositions and stage show, delivering fans the unexpected edge they always expect. Other world-class musicians chosen for Vai’s band are: Bryan Beller (bass), Jeremy Colson (drums), Dave Weiner (guitar and sitar) and Zack Wiesinger (lap steel).

“When I put a band and a show together I try to create an entertainment experience that I would like to have if I was sitting in the audience,” explains Vai. “I like to witness great musicianship but nothing too cerebral or overindulgent, I like to be stimulated by a large dynamic range of emotional intensities and melodic richness, I enjoy when people love their instrument and it shows by their oneness with it, I like to feel as though I’m part of a family with the audience and the band, and I like to walk away feeling uplifted and not beat up by somebody’s ego or the things they hate about themselves and the world. And of course I want a cool t-shirt.”

Live In Minneapolis - Where The Wild Things Are is available on DVD, Blu-ray, and audio CD on September 29th.

Stay tuned for news regarding pre-order packages, as well as details and ticket info for the Live In Minneapolis - Where The Wild Things Are charity benefit screening and auction in Hollywood, CA on September 15.

Mike Stern Big Neighborhood
August 5, 2009

Steve guests on new Mike Stern album Big Neighborhood

Five-time GRAMMY® nominated guitarist Mike Stern's music has always come from a colorful and diverse part of town – a place where numerous artistic styles converge to create a fresh sound that's rooted in jazz but refuses to adhere to rigid borders. Since his earliest recordings, this former bandmate of Miles Davis, Jaco Pastorius, Billy Cobham and other high-profile innovators has grafted elements of rock, blues, soul and more to his solid jazz foundations.

Aiding Stern in this latest chapter of his never-ending quest for the new and better groove is a long list of talented guests: guitarists Steve Vai and Eric Johnson; bassist-vocalists Esperanza Spalding and Richard Bona; jamband godfathers Medeski Martin & Wood; drummers Dave Weckl, Terri Lyne Carrington, Cindy Blackman and Lionel Cordew; bassists Chris Minh Doky and Lincoln Goines, and several others.

Big Neighborhood opens with the churning, rocked-up title track, in which Stern and Vai face off and create a thundering wall of distorted guitar riffs. “This tune obviously comes out of a Jimi Hendrix inspiration,” says Stern. “Steve rocks it with so much attitude. Along with the technique, he also has a lot of humor in his playing, which I love.” Vai reappears several tracks later in the Middle-Eastern flavored “Moroccan Roll,” a song inspired by the exotic music of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, the Pakistani vocalist who appeared on a number of recordings by Peter Gabriel, Eddie Vedder and other rock and pop artists of the West in the ‘80s and ‘90s.

Big Neighborhood is released worldwide on August 11 through Concord Records. For more on the record, and to order your copy, visit MikeStern.org. You can also preview the album on Mike's MySpace.

Live Music
August 3, 2009

Steve Vai and Ann Marie Calhoun lend talent to Live Music

Mass Animation, Sony Pictures and Intel Corporation today announced that the ground-breaking animated short film Live Music, a worldwide collaboration by animators using a unique application built on the Facebook Platform, will be attached to TriStar Pictures' animated feature Planet 51, scheduled for a Nov. 20 wide theatrical release in North America.

Live Music is directed by Yair Landau, former president of Sony Pictures Digital, and produced by Landau and Jacquie Barnbrook (producer of the Oscar-winning short, "The Chubb Chubbs"). It is the first production from Mass Animation, an effort sponsored by Intel Corporation that brings together the worlds of computer graphics, Hollywood and Facebook.

The 5-minute computer-generated animated short is inspired by Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" and early CGI films. Set in a musical instrument store, the story follows Riff, a rock 'n' roll guitar, who, as Landau describes it, "falls in love to the wrong song but ends up with Vanessa, the classical violin of his dreams." The story is conveyed through the universal language of music, allowing the expressions and actions of the characters to be instantly relatable globally. The instruments are brought to life through original compositions and familiar rock tunes played principally by legendary guitarist Steve Vai as Riff and acclaimed violinist Ann Marie Calhoun as Vanessa.

A new high-def trailer for Live Music can now be viewed on Apple's Quicktime Trailers Page. You can also view the trailer on YouTube. You can become a fan of Live Music on Facebook and check out some photos of Steve and Ann Marie during the recording sessions.

Tel-Aviv Alien Guitar Secrets Master Class Clarification

We have received a number of inquiries from fans asking if there will be a meet and greet following the Israel Master Class.  As over 1500 people will be attending this class, it will not be physically possible for Steve to meet and greet every attendee at the class.  Steve is only usually able to conduct meet and greets at smaller master classes with 100 participants or less.

In lieu of this, Steve will be presenting an extended question and answer session with the audience to make up for the lack of meet and greet.

We would also like to again state that Steve's appearance in Israel is for his Alien Guitar Secrets Master Class - and not a concert.

Steve Vai and the Carvin Legacy II
January 27, 2009

Introducing The Legacy II

After years of speculation, rumors, development and testing, Carvin and legendary guitar virtuoso Steve Vai are proud to introduce the new Vai Legacy II Series amplifiers. These all-tube 3-channel amps are the result of countless hours of design and development by Carvin engineers, working closely with Steve Vai. Additionally, the Legacy II has been reviewed and “tweaked” by renowned amp designer Benjamin Fargen of Fargen Amps. According to Benjamin Fargen, the result is "a powerful blend of high-end boutique sound and rock-solid American manufacturing."

"The Legacy II is a dream amp. It's simple, versatile and the sound is creamy and warm. Finally there is an amplifier that has a Master Volume control that can raise or lower the overall sound coming out of the speakers without changing its saturation or tone. Although the sound has retained the integrity of the original Legacy, there is now an added channel that acts as a boost on the clean channel giving it a bit more hair. No need to keep dreaming, it's here." - Steve Vai
