The
"Ultra Zone" Guitar
No Serial Number
Featured at the 2003 NAMM show and originally built in 2001 by luthier
Alistair Hay of Emerald
Guitars in Ireland, this guitar is a replica of the strange biotech
creation featured on the cover of The Ultra Zone.
It features a one-piece through neck with the EMG pickups and the Steinberger
tuning system attached. Surrounding that is polythene foam, carved to
the basic shape then coated with a mixture of carbon fiber and fiberglass
which was filled and sanded to shape. The add-on pieces range from bits
of brake pipe, industrial wire, aluminum insulation and armored cable,
and were affixed to the guitar after painting. The whole thing is 61"
long.
The guitar is finished in Triflash paint. The reptilian paint job turns
from gold to green to a sort of reddish closeout depending on how the
light hits it. There is also a wall mountable guitar case to house it
which, like the guitar, is also fiberglass covered foam with a rough
texture to simulate muscle tissue and sinews for a bio-mechanical look.
It all comes together to make an extremely nice package.
This guitar is stored safely at The Mothership.
